"How much farther do you think, Jed?"

"Don't know."

"Hell and damnation Jedidiah Strong Smith, ya always seem to know."

"Silas!"

"Christ, I went and sweared again, didn't I"

"Yup."

"Well why in little Jesus Christ's name shouldn't I swear when I feel like it. This idear of yourn of cutting through these mountains instead of crossing to Mojave desert again sure is tiring. If we don't get someplace soon with grass for the horses, I dam sure am going to feel like cussing one blue streak. And why shouldn't I cuss if it makes me feel better?"

"Tain't right"

"Well Gawd-Almighty, I sure heard you cut loose at a few Californio padres when they threw us in prison for trespassing on land they claimed belonged to their God-forsaken Church."

"Amen to that."

"Explain that you old fire and brimstone hypocrite."

"You said it."

"What'd I say. What?"

"God-forsaken Church."

"Whoset"

"The Californios."

"I ... Jed, there you go again. Sometimes I think I've got you all thought out, and you plumb slip one by me, and I don't know what in the hell you are talking about. Good God, now you are trying to tell me church is no damm good."

"Their's, not mine."

"You don't have a church."
